News 1 - Government forms a committee to review the country’s arbitration mechanism

To review institutionalization of arbitration mechanism in India, law ministry formed a committee under the leadership of Justice B N Srikrishna, to improve India’s arbitration mechanism and develop arbitration ecosystem in the country. Justice B N Srikrishna along with its committee check skill gaps of arbitration system.

The committee will have to review, plan and analyze the mechanism, followed by identifying amendments in laws and constituting empanelment of national and international arbitrators. This will also improve research and development impacting the domain.

News 2 - A 9-member Government panel to recommend in the National Sports Code

National Sports Code

The government has formed a nine-member government panel formed to make recommendations for bringing out a comprehensive National Sports Development Code across all disciplines. The committee, headed by Sports Secretary Injeti Srinivas, will study issues related to sports governance including court judgements and best international practices.

News 3 - Expert Group on SECC submits report to MoRD Shri Tomar

The Government mounted the Socio Economic and Caste Census (SECC) with the purpose of ranking households for receiving benefits under government programs. The Socio Economic and Caste Census has been concluded.

An Expert Group under the Chairmanship of former Finance Secretary Shri Sumit Bose was constituted to study the objective criteria for allocation of resources to States. The Expert Group has concluded that the use of SECC data and its TIN Number would enable the government to improve the efficacy of its interventions and will result in improved outcome.

News 4 - Reservation for girl students in IITs recommended by Timothy Gonsalves committee

Timothy Gonsalves committee

The Timothy Gonsalves committee has recommended reservation for girl students in IITs to address the issue of decrease in number of female students entering these institutes. The reservation for girl students will not affect the number of seats for male candidates.

The committee has suggested creating up to 20% supernumerary seats for girls out of the total number of seats. But only candidates who have already qualified in JEE-Advanced will be considered.

News 5 - Negotiation Committee constituted on Mahanadi by Water Resources Ministry

Water Resources Ministry constituted a negotiations committee to assess availability and utilization of waters of Mahanadi and its tributaries. The committee will examine existing water sharing agreements on the river and will consider claims of Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Jharkhand regarding availability and utilization of waters of these rivers.

It will be chaired by Member, Central Water Commission and will include representatives from Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Jharkhand. Other members include from Agriculture Ministry, Environment Ministry, Water Resources Ministry, and Met department.

News 6 - Sports Minister Vijay Goel reconstituted a committee to identify athletes under the TOP Scheme

Sports Minister Vijay Goel reconstituted TOP committee with the objective of identifying and supporting potential medal prospects for 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games under the “Target Olympic Podium” scheme. The committee will select elite athletes to provided financial assistance for their customized training at Institutes having world class facilities and other necessary support. The reconstituted committee has 10 members now.

A program, namely TOP (Target Olympic Podium) Scheme was formulated within the overall ambit of National Sports Development Fund. Under the scheme the selected athletes are provided financial assistance for their customized training at Institutes.
