It can also be a number having only decimal part. For example: 0.00345

Rules for writing a decimal number given its name

  • We write a decimal point for the word 'and' in the number name.

  • We write a whole number for the number name before the word 'and'. This is the whole number part of the decimal number.

  • We write a whole number for the number name after the word 'and'. This is the decimal part of the decimal number.

  • We see to it that the last digit has the place value given by the decimal unit like 'tenths','hundredths' and so on.

Example:

Write the decimal seventy-three and twenty six thousandths.

Solution

  • We write a decimal point for 'and' as "."
  • We write for seventy-three before 'and' as "73."
  • We write for twenty-six after 'and' as "0._26"
  • We see to it that the last digit 6 falls in the thousandths place and write twenty six thousandths as "0.026".
  • Therefore we write seventy-three and twenty six thousandths as "73.026"

Write the decimal six hundred forty-two and thirteen hundredths.

Solution

Step 1:

We write 'and' as a decimal point "."

We write six hundred forty-two before 'and' as "642."

We write thirteen after 'and' as "0.13"

Step 4:

We see that the last digit 3 is in hundredths place. So thirteen hundredths is "0.13"
