1 - Mumbai ranked 45th, Delhi 52nd on world's safe cities list
According to a report by Economist Intelligence Unit, Mumbai has been ranked as the 45th safest city on the Safe Cities Index (SCI). Delhi was ranked 52nd in the list. Tokyo, Singapore and Osaka were placed in the top-three position.
The Safe Cities Index (SCI) 2019 ranks 60 countries worldwide across five continents and measures the multi-faceted nature of urban safety, with indicators categorised as digital, infrastructure, health and personal security.
2 - India ranked 9th on Happiness among 28 global markets
According to the Global Happiness Survey by IPSOS, India at 77% has ranked 9th in the list on Happiness, among 28 nations. Australia and Canada tied at the top spot (at 86%) have emerged as the happiest nations of the world, followed by China (83%), Great Britain (82%), France (80%), US (79%), Saudi Arabia (78%) and Germany (78%).
Argentina (34%), Spain (46%) and Russia (47%) were ranked at the bottom of the list. These are the findings of a 28-country Ipsos survey conducted via Ipsos’s Global Advisor online survey platform.
3 - Sex ratio improved from 918 to 931 in five years
Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Smriti Irani said that Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) has improved by 13 points from 918 to 931 at the national level in last five years since the launch of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign.
Haryana, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh received honours for improving sex ratio at birth. Nine districts which included East Kameng of Arunachal Pradesh, Mahendragarh and Bhiwani in Haryana, Udham Singh Nagar of Uttrakhand, Tamil Nadu's Namakkal, and Jalgaon district of Maharashtra, were also awarded for better sex ratio at birth.
4 - Delhi, Mumbai fall in EIU’s Global Liveability Index 2019
An annual survey called as Global Liveability Index 2019 released by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) unveiled that India’s capital city Delhi and Mumbai fell six places to rank 118th and 119th out of 140 cities on basic indicators like stability, healthcare, education, infrastructure, culture and environment.
Austria’s Vienna city topped the index followed by Austria’s Melbourne and Australia’s Sydney at second and third place respectively.
5 - Times Higher Education released “World University Rankings 2020”
Times Higher Education World University Rankings released by United Kingdom (UK) based Times Higher Education unveiled that University of Oxford topped the rankings for the fourth consecutive year followed by California Institute of Technology at 2nd place and University of Cambridge at 3rd place.
India’s Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore were ranked among the 56 Indian institutes on the list of the best universities of the world. The new data revealed that the funding gap between the UK sector and other major higher education systems is widening.
6 - Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Gangs Of Wasseypur’ in the Guardian Best 100 list
The Guardian released their top 100 films of this century. Indian Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap's cult film Gangs Of Wasseypur became the only Indian film to feature in The Guardian list of 100 Best Films of the 21st century.
The two-film Gangs Of Wasseypur series was released in 2012, and narrated the saga of a coal mafia family in the town of Wasseypur in Dhanbad district of Jharkhand. Both the series received popularity. The Guardian top 100 list was topped by 2007 There Will Be Blood based on 1927 novel Oil.
7 - Indian diaspora largest in the world: UN report
India is the leading country of origin of international migrants in 2019 with a 17.5 million strong diaspora. The International Migrant Stock 2019, a dataset released by the Population Division of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, provides the latest estimates of the number of international migrants by age, sex and origin for all countries and areas of the world.
As per the report, migrants from Mexico constituted the second largest diaspora with 11.8 million people followed by China with 10.7 million people and Russia with 10.5 million people.
