1 - Sheikh Hasina Won Third Term as PM of Bangladesh
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina won third consecutive election on December 31, 2018. She won the highest majority of 287 seats out of 298 while the main opposition Party; Bangladesh National Party (BNP) managed to get merely 7 seats.
Because of such disastrous defeat, the opposition rejected the results of election and termed it ‘farcical.’ They claimed the results are influenced by vote rigging and demanded fresh election, which was not allowed.
2 - Sudhir Bhargava Appointed as New Information Chief Commissioner
Sudhir Bhargava has been appointed as the new Chief Information Commissioner. He had taken charge on January 1, 2019 with four new members appointed by the Central Information Commission (CIC) taking its strength to seven. However, four vacancies of CIC still remain vacant.
Under the Right to Information Act, the Central Information Commission is the highest authoritative body. All this while, it was working with only three members and they completed their tenure last month.
3 - President Kovind Approved Two Judges Elevation to Supreme Court
The Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice of India, Justice Ranjan Gogoi has recommended Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice Dinesh Maheshwari for promotion to the Apex Court.
On January 16, 2019, honorable president of India, Ram Nath Kobind approved the recommendation of elevating them to be judges of Supreme Court of India.
4 - Solar Man of India, Pranav R Mehta, Became the first Indian to Head Global Solar Council, USA
Mr. Pranav R Mehta has been appointed the president of Global Solar Council. The headquarters of Global Solar Council is located in Washington DC, USA.
Mr. Mehta is a visionary in the field of solar energy and the chairman of National Solar Energy Federation. At present, India is placed in Top 5 countries in the field of Solar energy and for this Mr. Mehta’s contribution cannot be denied. He has been invited by more than 15 countries because of his ideals and work in the field of Solar Energy in India.
